RTA: Railway Tie Association
The Railway Tie Association was organized in 1919 as The National Association of Railroad Tie Producers, which grew out of predecessor groups dating back to the late 1800's. The name was changed to The Railway Tie Association in 1932. The purpose of the Association is to promote the economical and environmentally sound use of wood crossties. The Association is involved in research into crosstie design, and ongoing activities dealing with sound forest management, conservation of timber resources, timber processing, wood preservation and safety of industry workers.

Transportation Research Board
The Transportation Research Board (TRB) is a unit of the National Research Council, a private, nonprofit institution that is the principal operating agency of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. The Board's mission is to promote innovation and progress in transportation by stimulating and conducting research, facilitating the dissemination of information, and encouraging the implementation of research results.
