National Transit Database (NTD)
Federal Transit Administration (FTA) collects and disseminates data on the state of mass transportation via the National Transit Database (NTD) program. Over 600 of the nation's transportation providers submit data to the NTD annually. Both the public and private sectors use this data to assess the current state of mass transit and plan for the future.

NTSB - Railroad
National Transportation Safety Board Railroad Division has the responsibility for railroad accident investigations involving passenger railroads, freight railroads, and commuter rail transit systems. These accidents typically involve collisions or derailments; some of these accidents lead to the release of hazardous materials.

Rail Energy Transportation Advisory Committee (RETAC)
The Rail Energy Transportation Advisory Committee (RETAC) was established by the Surface Transportation Board in July 2007 to provide advice and guidance to the Board, and to serve as a forum for discussion of emerging issues, regarding the transportation by rail of energy resources (including, but not necessarily limited to, coal, ethanol, and other biofuels). RETAC is comprised of 25 voting members, representing a balance of stakeholders with an interest in energy transportation by rail, including large and small railroads, coal producers, electric utilities, the biofuels industry, the petroleum industry, and the private railcar industry. The three members of the Board serve as ex officio members of RETAC, along with representatives of the Departments of Agriculture, Energy, Transportation, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Meetings, which are open to the public, are held at least twice a year.

Railroad-Shipper Transportation Advisory Council (RSTAC)
The Railroad-Shipper Transportation Advisory Council (RSTAC) was established pursuant to the ICC Termination Act of 1995 (Public Law 104-88, 109 Stat. 803). Its 15 appointed members consist of senior officials representing large and small shippers, and large and small railroads. In addition, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation and the three Board Members serve as ex officio members. The RSTAC provides advice on regulatory, policy and legislative matters, as appropriate, to the STB Chairman, the Secretary of Transportation, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

STB Rail Customer and Public Assistance Program
The Surface Transportation Board's Rail Customer and Public Assistance Program solves problems in ways ranging from a simple answer to a telephone inquiry to lengthy informal mediation efforts. Topics including questions on rates and other charges, railroad-car supply and service issues, claims for damage, interchange issues, employee complaints and community concerns. The staff also explains the Board's jurisdiction and procedures and informally answers questions based on the staff's knowledge and experience.
