Australia - Katoomba Scenic Railway - Blue Mountains Australia
Katoomba - It was built in 1879 to service a coal mine in the Jamison Valley. Over the years the railway was also used to convey coal and shale from the 'Ruined Castle' area and Megalong Valley.
Today the Scenic Railway is the world's steepest incline railway and conveys more than 850,000 passengers a year.
The funicular railway line descends through sandstone cliffs, via a rock tunnel beside Orphan Rock, then emerges to spectacular views and lush fern-filled rainforest.
It consists of a unique ride through a tunnel in the side of the mountain and descends
415 metres at a maximum grade of 52 degrees passing an ancient rainforest area
before reaching the Jamison Valley.

Australia - Lithgow Zig Zag Railway
Lithgow, New South Wales, Australia -Blue Mountains Australia. The Zig Zag Railway appeals to children and adults alike, especially those who once rode behind steam locomotives on the way to school or on holidays. It is a magical step back in time, filled with sights, sounds and smells of a bygone era. Every trip from Clarence Station winds its way through the remarkable Blue Mountains' scenery, offering glimpses of grand sandstone viaducts, accompanied by the chuffing steam locomotive. It is a chance to appreciate the difficult terrain that confronted the builders and marvel at how they brought the railway down into the Lithgow Valley and on westward.
