Hawaii - Laupahoehoe Train Museum
Laupahoehoe, HI - Take a Trip Back in Time - Laupahoehoe Train Museum
The purpose of the Laupahoehoe Train Museum is to preserve, promote and protect the historic, cultural, educational, social, civic and economic, interests of the North Hilo and Hamakua districts, while highlighting the history of the railroads on the island of Hawaii.
We are a small, community-run museum located on the beautiful Hamakua Heritage Coast of the Big Island of Hawai'i. Our goal is to honor the colorful history of our island's railroads. Much of our information is about the Hilo Railroad, which began in 1899 and lasted until 1946, when railroad tracks and facilities were irreparably damaged byExterior view of the Laupahoehoe Train Museum a devastating tsunami. The museum is located in the old station agent's house, which is furnished as it would have been in the early 1900's. Our photo collection keeps growing thanks to the generous donations from individuals and families having railroad connections.
Visitors are welcomed with the spirit of aloha, and will find fascinating photographs, railroad artifacts and memorabilia from days gone by. Our small gift shop boasting unique items hand-crafted by local residents. Many of the museum's volunteers have spent their lives in the community, and are delighted to "talk story" with visitors. The museum grounds are planted with tropical fruit trees and ornamentals, and make a lovely place to stroll, picnic or relax.

Hawaiia - Kauai Sugar Train
We invite you to take a train ride back in time to when sugar coated the island and went from field to factory in small sugar trains.
Grove Farm museum's impressive collection of steam locomotives bridges cane haul methods from the earliest ox-drawn carts to steam driven locomotives to the use of gas powered cane trucks. This experience offers visitors the opportunity to learn of the sugar plantation transportation story where imagination led the movement of sugar cane. It demonstrates that during the industrial age, man's inventiveness harnessed steam in order to move tons of cane as well as for use in other industrial machinery applications. In effect, this exhibit serves as Kauai's museum of science and industry, where the scale, smell, sound and use of this equipment fill one's senses and imagination with awe and inspiration.
Kauai Sugar Train Since 1975 Grove Farm museum has provided free train rides at a monthly fire-up that began operating out of the Grove Farm Company's Puhi roundhouse, where the locomotives have been stored since they were retired in 1957. In 1999 Grove Farm museum acquired a mile long section of the original Lihue Plantation railroad right-of-way adjacent to the historic Lihue sugar mill. After laying 1,800 feet of track, the monthly fire-up was moved there to provide the only authentic sugar plantation steam train experience in the state.
