Switzerland - Steam & nostalgic rides
Steam-train rides - where childhood dreams come true
Puffing and hissing through the Landwasser Valley, the Surselva and Engadin, powered by fire and water, the RhB steam engine will pull the wonderful old trains the length and breadth of Graubünden on seven days in the anniversary year.

What began in 1889 with the opening of the track from Landquart to Klosters, has become a 384-kilometre network set amidst mountainous terrain. Step into the wonderful world of the steam era and experience a piece of railway history at first hand as you travel full steam ahead for the mountains of Graubünden.

Switzerland, Rigi Kulm
Switzerland, Rigi Kulm
VITZNAU-RIGI KULM COGWHEEL RAILWAY
No other mountain railway in the Alps has a longer history than this one: the Vitznau Rigi Kulm cogwheel railway opened in 1871, making it Europe's first mountain railway. The journey was, and still is, an experience in itself.

GOLDAU - RIGI KULM COGWHEEL RAILWAY
Centrally located: the valley station of the cogwheel railway from Goldau is conveniently located on the north-south railway line and can be reached from Zurich Central Station in just 37 minutes, meaning that this is often the fastest way to reach Rigi Kulm.

The 82045 Locomotive Fund
The 82045 Steam Locomotive Trust is in the process of building the next member of the extinct Riddles BR 3MT 2‑6‑2 82000 tank class. Unlike many of the current new build projects, which are aiming to recreate larger main-line types, the new loco is intended specifically for heritage line use.

It has been suggested that this type could be an ideal candidate for limited series production. While the Trust say that this is well beyond their own scope, they believe that making the breakthrough with 82045 could encourage others to take over in the future. Batch production would drastically reduce the unit cost of building new 82000's, estimated at between £1,250,000 and £1,500,000 for 82045.

The Cévennes Railway, France
The Cevennes mountain railroad, the Cevenol, is a fascinating journey across valleys and over viaducts on the "line of 100 tunnels." The 'axe of economic rationality' hangs over the line, so ride it today and help keep it open!

The Härtsfeld-Museumsbahn
The ancient Härtsfeldbahn leading from Aalen via Neresheim to Dillingen/Donau (in bavaria) was frequently used for weekend trips due to the very nice landscape. But in the year 1972 the service was stopped and the line was de-mounted. The diesel rail-cars and their trailers were sold to other lines, the steam-locomotive 12 was placed on a playing ground and steam-locomotive 11 was left at Neresheim as a memorial. Normally this would be the end of the history of a branch line.

After long preparative work and a 5 years lasting project approval procedure the first step to reconstruct the first 3 kilometers was taken on Mai 16, 1996. Exactly to the 100th birtday of the Härtsfeldbahn, on October 20, 2001, the official service started on the line. The impossible has been made possible. Today the trains run on the Härtsfeld like 50 or 100 years ago, but only some days in the year.
