Pennsylvania - Newton Square Railroad Museum
Newtown Square, PA - The freight station is the last vestige of the Newtown Square branch of the P.R.R. freight and passenger line that once rumbled 9.2 miles through the township to Philadelphia.

To make room for the Winding Way by-pass road, the station was moved to its new home on the Drexel Lodge site on West Chester Pike. The Newtown Square Historical Preservation Society was pleased to have the opportunity to move and save this valuable piece of history. The Historical Society will start a complete restoration on May 11, 2000. They plan to use it as a railroad museum, preserving a piece of our history for future generations. In 2006 it was transferred to the Newtown Square Penn Railroad Museum Association.

Pennsylvania - Portage Station Museum
Portage, PA - The Portage Station Museum is located at the corner of Lee and Washington Streets. This station was built in 1926 and served until 1954 for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The first floor was the ticket office and waiting room and the second floor was for freight. Passengers would exit the building, walk under the concrete arch next to the museum, and climb up a stairway located in the middle of the arch. The stairs would put them at an outdoor waiting area located between the railroad tracks, allowing them to board westbound or eastbound trains. This is clearly depicted by the photograph at the top of the HO scale model of the Portage Railroad. The station currently houses the Portage Area Historical Society.

Pennsylvania - Railroad Hall & the Locomotive
Philadelphia, PA - How often do you get the chance to climb aboard a 350-ton Baldwin steam locomotive? Imagine yourself as the engineer of this massive engine in our simulated train factory. You'll feel the heat of the steam and hear the sounds of the machines as you learn about the science and technology of trains. Learn firsthand how steam and coal powered the first locomotives and discover how diesel, electricity, and magnetic levitation are used to power modern day locomotives to travel longer distances at greater speeds.

This is an authentic learning opportunity for exploring physical science concepts like energy, pressure, friction, and magnetic force. Look for simple machines in the workings of the complex design of the steam locomotive. With propulsion provided by steam, the states of matter are also on vivid display. All aboard! Next stop: The Train Factory!
