Tennessee - 21st Century Steam
As part of the Norfolk Southern 21st Century Steam Program, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (TVRM) offered a limited number of public excursions from 2011 through 2015. Power was ex-Southern Railway steam locomotives #630 (2-8-0, built in 1904) and #4501 (2-8-2, built in 1911). Both locomotives were restored to service by TVRM in Chattanooga. Although this program has ended, TVRM offers many great rail excursions, many pulled by our steam locomotives. Check out the Summerville Steam Special as a trip option for a 100-mile roundtrip ride from Chattanooga to Summerville (Georgia) on many dates throughout the year.

Tennessee - Cowan Railroad Museum
Cowan, TN - The Cowan Railroad Museum represents the railroad that has been an integral part of the city since 1849 when construction began on boring a railroad tunnel through the mountain two miles southeast of town. The Cumberland Mountain Tunnel was finished in 1852 before the railroad actually made it to Cowan from Nashville. The town, the railroad and the tunnel still exist today. In support of that endeavor and later frequent trains through this region, a substantial frame depot was built in 1904, and that building is where the museum now houses its collection for your enjoyment.

Tennessee - Little River Rail Road and Lumber Company Museum
Townsend, TN - The Little River Railroad and Lumber Company is a non-profit corporation founded in 1982 to preserve the heritage of the the Little River Lumber Company and the Little River Railroad. We operate a museum in Townsend, Tennessee, collecting, preserving and exhibiting the history of these companies, and of the people in this region.
Townsend was the site of the sawmill, and headquarters of this operation, which logged huge portions of what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, from 1901 until 1939.
The Little River became famous far beyond its remote mountain origins, due in large part to its innovations in railroad motive power, which included invention of the first 2-4-4-2 articulated Mallet, and the smallest 4-6-2 Pacific ever built for North American standard gauge.
