Virginia - C&O Railway Heritage Center
Clifton Forge, VA - The Chesapeake and Ohio Historical Society is proud to offer The C&O Railway Heritage Center | Clifton Forge. This Center is a railway heritage museum, interpretive, educational, and visitor's center that tells the story of the C&O Railway: the people, the places, and the technology. The story is the essential American tale of how our nation grew, how we lived and worked, and how we were all connected together by twin rails of steel. The purpose of this center is also to honor the memory and contribution of all the railroaders who built the railroads that allowed our nation to prosper, and all those railroaders who continue to keep America moving by rail.

The Goal of the Center is to be an inspiring, stimulating place that delights all who visit and leaves them with an understanding of the heritage of American Railroading. It is also designed to attract visitors and stimulate the economy of our community. Finally, it is to be a center of the Alleghany Highlands community, of the C&O Historical Society, and of all the railroad centers within Virginia's Rail Heritage Region.

Virginia - Fairfax Station Home Page
Fairfax, VA - Take a step back in time and discover the Fairfax Station Museum and the role it played in the history of Northern Virginia.

A key element in the development of the regional economy from its completion on the Orange & Alexandria Railroad in 1854, it played a critical role in the American Civil War and was the center of local community life for almost a century until modern highways and rail transportation made local train depots a thing of the past. The Station was an important supply and medical evacuation site during the Civil War where Clara Barton, later the founder of the American Red Cross, assisted in relief and evacuation efforts in 1862 during the Second Battle of Bull Run.

Museum displays, activities and events help preserve local history and promote railroading. Come explore Civil War history, railroading and the fascinating story of our local community.

Virginia - O. Winston Link Museum
Roanoke, VA - The O. Winston Link Museum collection comprises the striking photographic and auditory works developed by photographer-artist O. Winston Link between 1955 and 1960. A successful commercial photographer from New York, Link brought his studio outdoors to create carefully arranged images designed to convey the end of the steam propelled Norfolk & Western Railway and the communities and countryside along the right of way.

Covering much of Western Virginia and bordering portions of North Carolina, West Virginia and Maryland, Link took advantage of the region's then unique combination of mountainous terrain, sparsely arranged populations and steam rail infrastructure to capture the end of America's once thriving industrial age.

Link was prolific, taking more than 2,000 images and 100 7-inch reels of sound recordings in 21 trips. Today, Link's work constitutes the single most important photographic series taken of the region. Largely ignored for more than 20 years following their production, Winston's work enjoyed a series of international exhibitions, recordings and two published books beginning in the 1980s. Today, Link's N&W images are known worldwide. Wishing that his legacy be preserved and remain available to the communities he traversed, Link began negotiations with Roanoke's Historical Society of Western Virginia in 2000, personally selecting the site for the Museum, the former N&W Passenger Station.

Today, in addition to Link's work from 1955 to 1960, we collect non-railroad prints created by the artist and all of his photographic equipment, including a reproduction of his dark room. We also are the repository for the negative collection of The Roanoke Times daily newspaper.

Virginia - Richmond Railroad Museum
Richmond, VA - the Old Dominion Railroad Museum strives to interpret the social and economic impact that the area railroads and their employees had, and continue to have, on the Richmond area and its citizens.

On view outside are a steam saddle locomotive, baggage car and caboose. Free tours are given by knowledgeable hosts. The museum focuses on railroad companies which served central Virginia and their impact on Richmond and its citizens.
