Nova Scotia - Nova Scotia Museum of Industry
Stellarton, NS - The Museum of Industry's nine locomotives represent all of the power sources that have so far been used to run a railway: steam, diesel, gasoline and electricity.

We have two of the oldest surviving locomotives in the world, Samson and Albion, and some interesting examples of small industrial engines from the twentieth century.

The railway was essential to link Nova Scotia to the rest of Canada for the transfer of goods and people. Locomotives were often necessary tools for large manufacturers as well. Nova Scotia's first rail line, the Albion Railway, was only about 10 km long, but it helped get Pictou County's coal to market.

Nova Scotia - Nova Scotia's Railway Heritage
Nova Scotia, on Canada's Atlantic Coast, is also called "Canada's Ocean Playground". The Province is steeped in a rich and varied history, as its original Mi'kmaq people were joined by French Acadian settlers, British Loyalists, Scottish Highlanders, German and French Protestants, Irish peasants fleeing famine and later by Italian and Polish miners.

Nova Scotia also has a rich and varied railway history, boasting one of the earliest railways in Canada to use steam locomotives (at the Albion Mines in Pictou County) and what was once North America's most intensively worked coal railway (the Sydney and Louisburg RR). "The Ocean Limited" was introduced in 1904 by the Intercolonial Railway to provide first-class passenger service between Halifax and Montreal. Remarkably, history can still be experienced today in Nova Scotia. Now thoroughly modernized, VIA Rail's "Ocean" continues to provide this service and is perhaps unique in being a named passenger train that has run for over a century.

The Nova Scotia Railway Heritage Society is delighted to help introduce you to some of the railway history of Nova Scotia and to some of the museums in which you can relive past railway glories of one of Canada's most history-rich provinces. Kindly browse through the remainder of this site to learn about these museums.

Nova Scotia - Orangedale Railway Museum
Orangedale, NS - Orangedale Railway Museum, Inverness County, Cape Breton represents a now unique, High Victorian style station built to a standard pattern in 1886 by the Intercolonial Railway Company. The Rankin Family's song "Orangedale Whistle" evokes the spirit of this rural station found four miles (6.4 kilometers) south from Exit 4 off the Trans Canada Highway.

Visitors will see the stationmaster's work place where tickets were sold and parcels and telegrams sent and received. Often telegraph demonstrations are given by the station agent on duty. The Ladies' Waiting Room displays an assortment of railway artefacts including a model of the Grand Narrows (near Iona) Railway Bridge. Original station lamps and a large locomotive bell are housed in the Express/Baggage Room.

The entire second floor was an apartment for the stationmaster and his family. You can see some of the original furniture, period furnishings, railway uniforms, artefacts found when the station platform was replaced and many historic pictures.

Outside is a replica freight shed and a number of pieces of rolling stock from a bygone era including a snowplow, boxcar, wooden caboose, industrial locomotive and speeder. On special days the locomotive and snow plow are operated.

Special events bring life and laughter to the station during the season as railroaders and enthusiasts gather to relive the heyday of the station.
