What began in 1889 with the opening of the track from Landquart to Klosters, has become a 384-kilometre network set amidst mountainous terrain. Step into the wonderful world of the steam era and experience a piece of railway history at first hand as you travel full steam ahead for the mountains of Graubünden.

Switzerland, Rigi Kulm
Switzerland, Rigi Kulm
VITZNAU-RIGI KULM COGWHEEL RAILWAY
No other mountain railway in the Alps has a longer history than this one: the Vitznau Rigi Kulm cogwheel railway opened in 1871, making it Europe's first mountain railway. The journey was, and still is, an experience in itself.

GOLDAU - RIGI KULM COGWHEEL RAILWAY
Centrally located: the valley station of the cogwheel railway from Goldau is conveniently located on the north-south railway line and can be reached from Zurich Central Station in just 37 minutes, meaning that this is often the fastest way to reach Rigi Kulm.

The 82045 Locomotive Fund
The 82045 Steam Locomotive Trust is in the process of building the next member of the extinct Riddles BR 3MT 2‑6‑2 82000 tank class. Unlike many of the current new build projects, which are aiming to recreate larger main-line types, the new loco is intended specifically for heritage line use.

It has been suggested that this type could be an ideal candidate for limited series production. While the Trust say that this is well beyond their own scope, they believe that making the breakthrough with 82045 could encourage others to take over in the future. Batch production would drastically reduce the unit cost of building new 82000's, estimated at between £1,250,000 and £1,500,000 for 82045.
