Colorado - Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad
Antonito CO & Chama NM - A Place For Those Born Too Late
Hidden away in a little-known corner of the southern Rocky Mountains on the border of New Mexico and Colorado is a precious historic artifact of the American West that time forgot. Built in 1880 and little changed since, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is the finest and most spectacular example of steam era mountain railroading in North America. Its equipment, structures and vast landscape exist today as if frozen in the first half of the twentieth century.

The time has long passed when the railroad last hauled precious metals over Cumbres Pass. But its steam locomotives still labor up steep grades carrying visitors over high trestles, through tunnels, and along narrow shelves above yawning gorges. In an era of strip malls, cruise ships and jumbo jets, the Cumbres & Toltec provides an experience for those seeking something different. It provides adventures that unfold in the easy cadence of Mountain Time.

The Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, Inc. is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization which shares with the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Commission the stewardship of this unique railroad property of important historic significance and remarkable scenic beauty. Our mission is to preserve and interpret the railroad and to support its operation for the people of Colorado and New Mexico who own it, and the tens of thousands of visitors who come to be transported back in time through the beauty of the San Juan Mountains.

Colorado - Galloping Goose Historical Society
Dolores, CO - The Galloping Goose Historical Society of Dolores, Inc. was founded in 1987. The Society's first big project (in 1991) was to build a replica of the original RGS Dolores depot. The new building is slightly northeast of the original location. It is a Victorian structure and painted in the RGS color scheme of buff yellow with brown trim. It contains the Society's railroad museum and gift shop.

In 1997 and 1998, the Society completely restored Galloping Goose No. 5 to operating condition through the efforts of hundreds of hours of volunteer labor and thousands of dollars in donations. Goose No. 5 made its first run in almost 47 years on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad in May 1998. Goose No. 5 is now a very popular attraction operating on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad in June and on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad during Railfest in August.

In 1999 the Society obtained ownership of RGS coach 256 and plans to restore it for static display in front of the Dolores Town Hall as the Chamber of Commerce visitors center and perhaps eventually to restore it to operating condition.

This journey is full of breath-taking panoramas across the Arkansas River Valley and humorous narratives about Leadville's colorful past. Colorado - Royal Gorge Route Railroad
Cañon City, CO - Climb aboard Colorado's most scenic train for a journey through the spectacular Royal Gorge. 1999 marked the return of passenger service through this magnificent gorge after a 32 year absence. The Royal Gorge Route follows the most famous portion of the old Denver & Rio Grande Western train line, 24 miles round-trip, from Cañon City to Parkdale and return. The two hour train ride takes passengers through the "Grand Canyon of the Arkansas" on an unforgettable journey over the famous Hanging bridge, which clings precariously to the steep granite walls of the Royal Gorge, towering over 1,000 feet above.
