New Hampshire - Conway Scenic Railroad
North Conway Village, NH - In 1974, after several years of hard work with many dedicated volunteers, Dwight Smith and his partners reopened the beautiful 1874 Boston & Maine railroad station and surrounding property in the center of North Conway Village. Their goal was to preserve and share the New Hampshire railroading experience with future generations. The station that they so lovingly restored remains a village icon today.

In the beginning, there were 5½ miles of track between North Conway and Conway villages and only coach seating was available. We now operate two passenger excursion trains over three routes and 35½ combined miles, each with seating choices of Coach, First Class and Dining Car. It is our hope that, regardless of your age or choice of travel accommodations, you will enjoy a ride with us this year and, just for a while, find yourself transported back to a time when life was simpler and railroads fueled the economic growth of our country.

New Hampshire - J.E. Henry Railway at Loon Mountain
Lincoln, NH - J.E. Henry Railway at Loon Mountain

Loon Mountain's German-built 0-4-0T engine runs along the resort's J.E. Henry Railroad. The railroad, which shuttles skiers and snowboarders 600-feet between its two main base lodges every winter, harkens back to the narrow-gauge logging trains that ran through New Hampshire's White Mountains more than a century ago. Originally built to burn coal, the engine was retrofitted to burn wood when it came to Loon in the 1970s.

New Hampshire - Mount Washington Cog Railway
Mount Washington, NH - The beauty of the mountains and the thrill of ascending the Northeast's highest peak are just as enchanting today as they were in 1869, when Sylvester Marsh opened the world's first mountain-climbing railroad on New Hampshire's Mount Washington.

Nearly 150 years later, the Mount Washington Cog Railway continues to provide a sense of adventure and history as it carries passengers up a 3-mile-long trestle and the steepest railroad tracks in North America to the 6,288-foot summit of Mount Washington. There, visitors can take in the spectacular panoramic view, spanning the mountains and valleys of New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont, north into Canada, and east to the Atlantic Ocean.

Passengers may choose to ride The Cog in a car powered by a historic steam locomotive or the more modern and eco-friendly biodiesel engines.

New Hampshire - Potter Place Railroad Station
Andover, NH - The Potter Place railroad station, built in 1874, houses a significant portion of the Society's historical collection. This station is an extremely well-preserved example of Victorian station design and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located on the Northern Railroad (later the Boston & Maine Railroad) line that ran from Boston to White River Junction in Vermont, and on to Montreal. This station preserves intact the station master's office, and recreates the feeling of a busy railroad depot of the early to mid 20th century.

The station now functions as a museum, displaying many of the artifacts in the Andover Historical Society's collection. Annually a special exhibit is mounted featuring a particular aspect of the history of the Town of Andover.
